Founded by two Duke graduates in 1976, Truckin’ Movers has always considered itself lucky to share the City of Medicine with Duke University. For over thirty years we have had the pleasure of assisting staff, professors, graduate students and undergraduates with their professional moving and storage needs. We often work near Duke’s beautiful campuses. This year, with such a warm spring, the Duke Gardens in particular are spectacular, full of vibrant color.

It was on one such graduate student move that we noticed this small sticker with a Duke Blue Devil, saying “Take the Pledge: Bleed Blue, Live Green.” It turns out that Duke’s Residence Life & Housing Services (RLHS) is committed to “a community learning experience for a sustainable future” (1). Duke students are encouraged to recycle and to save water, paper and electricity. RLHS also suggests that students purchase carbon credits when traveling; and that they eat and shop green, including purchasing locally.

It’s great to see the old alma mater promoting green living!

Truckin’ Movers knew when we handled Dr. William Schlesinger’s interstate move from Durham, N.C., where he’d served as the Dean of the Nicholas School for the Environment at Duke University, up to his new gig as President of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, N.Y., that the renowned ecologist would be busy. We didn’t, however, think it would involve a new career as a radio show host.

As at least one of our Truckin’ Movers’ family has had a class with the Professor, it was great to learn he is still teaching in the form of hosting a radio show aimed at raising environmental consciousness. Airing on WAMC Northeast Public Radio, Earth Wise is “a radio program that examines weighty environmental concerns – such as hydraulic fracturing and climate change – in layman’s terms” (1).

Yes, it’s the 1st of May, May Day – which means that we are officially at the end of one quartering of the year and the beginning of another. Farewell winter and welcome spring! Let the easy living months begin!

May is also National Moving Month, so dubbed because May kicks off the busy summer moving season. According to a study prepared by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census, “Nearly half of all moves (48.4 percent) take place during the four months of June through September; about 60 percent are in June through October” (1).

Dance once around the may pole for your local moving professionals. Here at Truckin’ Movers we’ll be prepping our bio-fuel trucks and limbering up our moving muscles. So bring on the moving boxes, the international, interstate and local moves – we’ll be ready!

Each year on April 22nd we celebrate Earth Day, marking the anniversary of the first Earth Day in 1970, which is often considered the birth of the modern environmental movement. Earth Day was first conceived by Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin in response to his witnessing of the effects of a 1969 oil spill off the coast of California. Seeking to harness the energy of the student anti-war movement in the service of the environment, the Senator “announced the idea for a ‘national teach-in on the environment’ to the national media . . . and built a national staff of 85 to promote events across the land” (1).

Since 1970, Earth Day has grown larger and involved more people each year. EarthDay.org reports that: “for its 40th anniversary, Earth Day Network reestablished Earth Day as a powerful focal point around which people could demonstrate their commitment. Earth Day Network brought 225,000 people to the National Mall for a Climate Rally, amassed 40 million environmental service actions toward its 2012 goal of A Billion Acts of Green®, launched an international, 1-million tree planting initiative with Avatar director James Cameron and tripled its online base to over 900,000 community members” (1).

Since 1976, Truckin’ Movers is proud to be a green moving and storage company. We believe that Earth Day is about taking action and no action is too small. Whether it’s our recycled box program where we buy back your used moving boxes, or our employee recycling center, or our biofuel trucks, or our green-designed storage warehouse, we are doing our part to ensure a sustainable future.

Truckin’ Movers, your local moving professional, has long been committed to incorporating green, environmentally friendly practices into our daily operations. We believe that every green step we take counts!

So we’ll take care of the biodiesel moving trucks that we fill up at our solar-powered fuel station. We’ll make sure we ship your belongings as efficiently as possible to minimize “deadheading” and reduce the miles trucks travel empty. We’ve got you covered with our off-the-grid green-designed storage warehouse in Durham, North Carolina. In our administrative offices we’ll pledge to recycle everything from used electronics to our employee’s water bottles.

Whether you are making an international move from Chapel Hill to Tel Aviv, or an interstate move from Cary to Asheville, Truckin’ Movers will deliver a move certain to escalate your carbon credits. But should you wish to get even more bang for your green buck, we also encourage our customers to use our recycled boxes, and to keep the green-chain going by selling them back to us when you’re done with your move.

Sustainability comes one green action at a time.

“The January 2004 issue of Money Magazine names Cary, N.C. the hottest town in the East and one of six Hottest Towns in America. In August 2006, Cary was again recognized by Money Magazine as one of the Best Small Cities in America, ranking fifth on the magazine’s 2006 list of Best Places to Live” (1).

With all of this attention over the years, it’s no wonder that Truckin’ Movers has relocated families into Cary from everywhere in the continental United States. Surely you’ll forgive us for tipping these newcomers off to Guarino’s on Buck Jones Road. After all, what move day would be complete without some great pizza?

A local move is defined as any move in which the origin site is within thirty-five miles of the destination site. Moving companies charge by the hour for this type of move, rather than by weight.

We’ve had a lot of practice over the years at Truckin’ Movers perfecting the art of the local move. Whether you are relocating across the Research Triangle Park from Cary to Chapel Hill, or across Orange County from Carrboro to Hillsborough, we offer the following advice for an affordable and stress-free local move.

1. Organize and streamline your belongings.

While our professional moving crews are trained to work efficiently, the more prep work you can do to consolidate your belongings before the crew arrives, the more affordable your move may be.

Break down beds, tables, and large desks.

Box dishware, clothes, books, linens, toiletries and other loose items.

When possible bring boxes downstairs to a central location.

Identify in advance any oversize furniture that may need special handling.

Consider beforehand how to situate the moving truck as close as possible to your residence.

2. Decide whether to use a local moving company or make the move yourself.

The action of assessing and streamlining your belongings will give you great information on what will be required to conduct your local move. When deciding whether to handle the move yourself, consider the size and weight of the furniture and boxes you need moved. Evaluate honestly your budget for the move. Give thought to how much time you have to devote to making the move.

3. Call around for quotes from local movers.

Shop around and compare the rates of professional movers. We recommend doing a web search for moving companies in your area. Many professional movers offer online move quote request forms that make initiating contact easy. Be prepared to provide information on your belongings, including the number and type of rooms you are moving, any unusual or oversize pieces of furniture, and of course, where you’re moving from and to – even if it’s in the same zip code!

For over thirty-five years, Truckin’ Movers has been honored to move families and businesses locally in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Our bio-diesel trucks have traversed Franklin Street more times than we can count – sometimes, on Halloween, they’re even in costume!

Truckin’ Movers is especially pleased to be a Chapel Hill moving company because the town shares with us a commitment to environmental sustainability. “Chapel Hill has built a reputation as being a leader in North Carolina on social, economic and environmental issues,” proclaims the town’s web site. “The Council has introduced programs to holistically address issues of sustainability through social equity, economic vitality and environmental protection. With the passionate involvement of our citizens, we intend to move toward becoming a sustainable community” (1).

Now that’s a goal your local green moving company can get behind! Truckin’ Movers has long combined green technologies with innovative green approaches to reduce our carbon footprint. When our trucks are driving through Orange County, they’re doing so on bio-diesel, which burns much cleaner than regular diesel, contains no sulfur, and is nearly carbon neutral.

We might not all wear Tarheel blue on game day, but we all call this part of North Carolina home. At Truckin’ Movers we’re doing what we can to sustain this beautiful region, one green move at a time.

Our moving trucks run on biodiesel, a cleaner burning, alternative fuel made from organic sources. We have chosen to use biodiesel instead of traditional fuel for many reasons:

1. Biodiesel is truly a renewable resource. It is produced from such sources as vegetable oils extracted from soybeans, sunflowers, and canola. It can also be extracted from greases or even leftover restaurant oil — making it renewable and recyclable!

2. Biodiesel is biodegradable and non-toxic.

3. Biodiesel burns cleaner than petroleum diesel, yielding significantly less carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, sulfate and particulates.

4. Biodiesel is a locally produced product (check out our friends at Carolina Biodiesel).

5. Biodiesel makes our trucks happy. Biodiesel has greater lubricity than regular diesel fuel and also acts as a solvent, reducing engine build-up.

So the next time you see a Truckin’ Movers moving truck in your Durham or Chapel Hill, NC neighborhood, and you can’t help but smile, remember that boot’s been traveling green.
